Which test technique fits?

Short scenarios; pick the technique that fits. Practice choosing between partitioning, boundaries, decision tables, state transitions and experience-based and white-box coverage.

Tip: the exam gives you a short scenario; the first words about the input (a range, a combination, a history) usually point to the technique.

How to choose

  • Values in ranges or groups: equivalence partitioning, then boundary value analysis for the edges.
  • Several conditions combining into outcomes: decision table testing.
  • Behavior that depends on history, with states and events: state transition testing.
  • No spec, little time, past defects to draw on: experience-based techniques such as error guessing.
  • Looking at the code and its coverage: statement and branch coverage (white-box).
